What to consider when looking for a watch worth buying

James Mainwearning is a watch expert at Est.1897.  Here, he shares his top tips for spotting a timepiece that's worth adding to your collection.

Every man should have at least one high-quality and stylish watch in his arsenal. Wearing an impressive timepiece can help you to look more professional and put together. Plus, if you choose the right one, it can show that you have good taste. But, there are so many watches on the market that separating those worth buying from those that aren't isn't always easy.

I'm going to share my top tips for spotting a watch that would make a great addition to your collection. Read on to learn more.

Opt for a classic design that won't go out of style

When you're investing in a watch, it's best to choose one with a classic design that won't go out of style anytime soon. This will help to ensure that you'll be buying a piece you can keep and wear for years, if not decades to come.

A tasteful gold or silver style will always work well, and a watch with a simple face and black or brown leather strap would make a great choice, too. If you see a watch that you like, consider whether it's something you're likely to still wear 10 years from now. If the answer is yes, it could make the perfect choice.

Check that it's from a reputable brand

If you're looking for a watch that's going to last, and that might even increase in value, it's important that you buy from a respected brand. If you visit a trusted jeweller's, any watch they offer should come from a reputable manufacturer, but it can be difficult to distinguish which brands are worth buying from and which ones aren't when you're shopping online or looking to purchase a pre-owned timepiece.

There are a range of watch brands I would recommend buying from. You'll have already heard of Rolex, TAG Heuer, and Omega — all of which are fantastic. But Breitling, Cartier, and Tudor are also well known for their high-quality, long-lasting, and stylish designs. If you're shopping for a watch and have quite a generous budget, a timepiece from any of these manufacturers will serve you incredibly well.

Consider whether it's being sold for a fair price

When you're shopping for a watch and want to ensure you're getting a good deal, it's important that you put plenty of research into what kind of price you can expect to pay for the type of timepiece you're after. Then, you'll feel far more confident when it comes to deciding whether a watch is worth the asking price.

As a general rule, if someone is severely undercharging for what is supposed to be a high-quality watch, it's probably too good to be true. It could be damaged or might even be a replica. Similarly, it's not uncommon for some watch traders to overcharge their customers, so you should ensure you're well-informed before walking into a shop or browsing the internet for a new accessory to add to your collection.

When buying a watch, it isn't always easy to work out whether you're getting a good deal. But, if you take these tips on board, you should find it much easier to distinguish between which timepieces are worth owning, and which aren't.
