A brief history of Christmas presents

One of the best things about Christmas is the tradition of gift giving. We are encouraged to buy gifts for friends and loved ones to show them how much we love and appreciate them. However, as wonderful as the tradition of giving is, it can often seem like Christmas gifts just keep getting more expensive.

For example, in 1970, the most expensive 'popular' Christmas gift was the Talking Viewmaster, which sold for £4.62 while the most expensive popular gift of 2018 is the PlayStation Classic, available at £89.99.

musicMagpie, the world's biggest reseller of physical media, has looked back at the most popular of every year from 1970 to 2018 to see how the cost has really changed. The website has also used historic inflation rates to calculate the equivalent cost in today's money.

Interestingly, out of the 48 years analysed, 1987 came out as the cheapest, with the top 5 presents costing just £35.48 (£96.70 in today’s money). At the other end of the scale, 2013 came out as the most expensive, coming to a grand total of £1,092.40 (£1,215.92 in today’s money).
